The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel written by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (J. R. R. Tolkien) who is a Merton professor of English language and literature.
The LOTR story began as merely a sequel to the novel “The Hobbit” which developed into a much larger story. The LOTR story takes place in an alternate pre-history, the third-age of middle earth which is populated by humans, humanoid races (hobbit, dwarfs, elves and orcs) and other creatures like ents, wargs, and trolls. The title of the book refers to the Dark Lord Sauron, who created the Rings of Power and the One Ring which is believed as the ultimate weapon to conquer and rule the Middle-Earth.
LOTR was described by its creator as a mtyhopoeia (a narrative genre in modern literature and film of a fictional mythology created by the author). The influences included on this story are philology, mythology, industrialization and religion and tolkiens experiences in world war.
LOTR is considered to have had a great effect on modern fantasy and has led to numerous references in popular culture.
