Farewell My Concubine is a 1993 Chinese film directed by the famous Chinese film director Chen Kaige which portrays the impact of Chinese political crisis during the 20th century on a Peking opera troupe. The film is based on the novel by Lilian Lee and is considered by critics to be one of the films from the Fifth Generation movement that gave Chinese film directors during that period recognition from world audience. The film focuses on the lives of two Peking opera performers and the woman who had became a part of their relationship. Among the numerous awards Farewell My Concubine had received was the prestigious Palme d’Or in the 1993 Cannes Film Festival.
